Master's Thesis in Biology

Through your master's thesis, you can demonstrate that you are capable of independently addressing a biological research question.

IMPORTANT: To begin your master's thesis, you must have earned 90 LP (or 27 MA-Ed-Bio).

Once you have completed all coursework, you may register for the master's thesis (credentials for grades required). The thesis period lasts 6 months; upon submission of a justified request, an extension of two months may be granted, and in justified exceptional cases, a further one-month extension may be granted. Please note:

  • You should begin your master's thesis within three months of your last exam.

  • Note: The master's thesis must be registered in CAS no later than one month after work begins. (See below for the process.) The Academic Committee also reserves the right, in individual cases, to review lab notebooks to verify that the experiments described in the thesis were conducted within the registered time frame.

  • The first reviewer should be a member of the Department holding a professorship. The two reviewers must be from two different research groups (departments) to ensure an independent review. Reviewers from the following list are eligible: List of Reviewers Winter Semester 25/26 (pdf)

  • External theses must be approved in advance by the Examination Board (see the application for approval of an external thesis)

To register, please fill out the linked form. Submit the completed form, sign the generated PDF file, and send it to the primary examiners for entry into the CAS.

Master's Thesis Registration Form

The primary supervisor should be a professor in the Department; the secondary supervisor must come from a different research group (department). You can find out who has the authority to supervise theses in the List of Supervisors for the Winter Semester 25/26 (PDF).

If you wish to write an external master's thesis, you must submit a request to the Dean of Studies. The informal confirmation from the external advisor must state that “the thesis will be supervised and the student will be provided with the necessary resources.” In this case as well, the first examiner must be a member of the Department holding a professorship.
Please also refer to the KIT Information Sheet – External Theses (as of July 2017).

To extend the deadline for the thesis, please fill out the Application for Extension of Entitlement to an Examination and email it to the Chair of the Examination Board at biologiestudium ∂does-not-exist.chem-bio kit edu. Processing may take up to three weeks. A second extension is only possible in the event of illness, with a doctor’s note.

Please observe the submission deadline; if the thesis is submitted late, it will be graded a 5.0!

Please remember to include the declaration of originality, stating that you wrote the thesis independently and did not use any resources other than those cited in the references. This declaration must be signed!

A printed version for the Student Affairs Office is no longer required!!! Please upload your thesis as a PDF along with the digitally signed declaration of originality (IMPORTANT!) (see below).
The digitally submitted file must have the following format :
LastName_FirstName_Submission_Bio_MA.pdf
Example: Duck_Donald_Submission_Bio_BA.pdf

Please note: You will NOT receive an automatic confirmation after uploading the file. It may take up to one week for the submission to be recorded in CAS. We appreciate your understanding!
The date of upload is considered the OFFICIAL submission date.
Please contact your primary and secondary reviewers in a timely manner to clarify whether the examiners also require a printed copy of the thesis. The Student Affairs Office does not distribute theses to the examiners!
